Dutch singer Duncan Laurence has been announced as the winner of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv, Israel.
He performed “Arcade”, an emotive ballad co-written with Joel Sjöö and Wouter Hardy. But who is Duncan Laurence?
Born as Duncan de Moor in 1994, the 25 year-old artist graduated from Rock Academy in Tilburg. He rose to fame when he participated in the fifth season of The Voice of Holland. During the show, Laurence met Ilse DeLange, who we remember with Waylon aka The Common Linnets at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014. It was her to send “Arcade” to the Dutch selection.
Duncan is not stranger to have success. Last year, he had a hit as songwriter in South Korea with TVXQ single “Closer”.
About “Arcade”, the star said: “I got my inspiration from the story of a loved one who died at a young age. Arcade is a story about the search for the love of your life. It is the hope for the – sometimes – unattainable.”
Lyrics:
Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
A broken heart is all that’s left
I’m still fixing all the cracks
Lost a couple of pieces when
I carried it, carried it, carried it home
I’m afraid of all I am
My mind feels like a foreign land
Silence ringing inside my head
Please, carry me, carry me, carry me home
I spent all of the love I’ve saved
We were always a losing game
Small-town boy in a big arcade
I got addicted to a losing game
Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
All I know, all I know
Loving you is a losing game
How many pennies in the slot?
Giving us up didn’t take a lot
I saw the end ‘fore it begun
Still I carried, I carried, I carried on
Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
All I know, all I know
Loving you is a losing game
Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
All I know, all I know
Loving you is a losing game
I don’t need your games, game over
Get me off this rollercoaster
Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
All I know, all I know
Loving you is a losing game
Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
All I know, all I know
Loving you is a losing game
Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
