Australia has picked Australian singer-songwriter and actress Kate Miller-Heidke to represent the country at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Israel with her song “Zero gravity”.
Born in Brisbane, Kate graduated from Griffith’s Queensland Conservatorium with a Bachelor of Music, majoring in classical voice.
She played in several Brisbane bands before going solo in 2002.
In 2004, Miller-Heidke independently recorded and distributed her first EP “Telegram”, a collection of songs, all written by herself.
The track “Space they cannot touch” became a hit in Australia and it was released as third single for her major-label debut album “Little Eve”.
Between 2008 and 2014, the star released other three albums: “Curioser”, “Nightflight” and “O Vertigo!”.
Beside her musical career, Kate also appeared in various musicals in Australia, UK and US.
Eurovision’s entry “Zero gravity” is a pop-opera song written by Miller-Heidke after her experience with post-natal depression due to her son Ernie’s birth.
About it, she said: “Like so many women, the aftermath of childbirth left my world shaken. The birth of my son, Ernie, was lengthy and traumatic. The was a period afterwards when I couldn’t remember who I was. After Ernie turned two, I woke up one day and felt somehow… better. The fog had lifted. The lyrics talk to depression personified, as if it were an awful lover or terrible friend, and expresses the relief at finally getting them out of your life. “Zero Gravity” is about leaving seriousness behind, something I feel resonates with the essence of the Eurovision Song Contest!”.
Lyrics:
Hey you
It’s me again
Hey you
Stone in my shoe
I’ve been aching
Feeling low
You’re so heavy
I have got to let you go
I’m going where there’s zero
Gravity
Zero
Gravity
Zero gravity
I’m free, oh
Hey you (hey you, hey you, hey you)
Lock with no key
Hey you (hey you, hey you, hey you)
Earth with no sea
I’ve been freezing
On the ground
You’re so heavy
I can’t let you keep me down anymore
Oh, zero
Gravity
Zero
Gravity
(And it feels like) oh
(And it feels like) oh
(And it feels like) ah
(And it feels like) ah
Nothing holding me down
Nothing holding me down
Nothing holding me down now
Nothing holding me down
Nothing holding me down
Nothing holding me down
Nothing holding me down now
Nothing holding me down
Zero (nothing holding me down, nothing holding me down)
Gravity
