Last January, Lake Malawi were announced as the Czech representative in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 with the song “Friend of a friend”.
Formed in 2013, the indie pop band consists of Albert Černý (vocalist, guitarist, and keyboardist), Jeroným Šubrt (bassist and keyboardist) and Antonín Hrabal (drummer).
The band name is inspired by the song “Calgary” by Bon Iver. They released their debut single “Always June” in 2014, performing it live during an interview with BBC London.
The same year, Lake Malawi opened for Thirty Seconds to Mars in Prague in 2014.
After several singles, the group released their first studio album “Surrounded by light” in 2017. The title track and “Paris” entered the Radio top 100 in Czech Republic.
Now, Lake Malawi represent their country in Tel Aviv.
The track “Friend of a friend” was written by Černý and produced by Jan Steinsdoerfer & Mikolaj Maciej Trybulec.
It’s a feel-good track that sounds like a Maroon 5 or DNCE song.
Lake Malawi frontman explained the meaning of the song: “The song is about a friendship, about the theory that it’s enough to have three or four friends to reach anybody in the whole world”.
Czech Republic has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest seven times since making its debut at the 2007 contest in Helsinki.
Last year Mikolas Josef became the second Czech entrant to reach the final and first to reach the top ten, placing sixth with the song “Lie to me”.
