Singer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Ryan Egan captivates listeners with his new single “Cruel times”.
The track was written and produced by Egan himself with the help of collaborator Max Harwood (Lewis Del Mar) and a slew of other NYC musicians such as Dane Orr (Sonnymoon) and others.
“Cruel times” is a moody, smooth song that combines the elegant voice/style of Ryan with elements of alt-pop and jazz.
About the song the New York artist said: “The song is a testament to the era at which we are living through; one of impending societal and environmental catastrophe while political leaders in the US and abroad tout overt bigotry and place corporate interests and pseudoscience above citizens. Everyday we are asking ourselves, ‘what the fuck is happening and what can we possibly do to change course?'”.

Lyrics:

Cruel times
When the glow of city light
Burns slowly

Cruel times
When a wordless lullaby
Controls me

First our land
Then it’s off with their heads
Blame the poor ones
With no self respect
Then you’ll wash your hands of it
In poison rain

Cruel times
When the glow of city light
Burns slowly

Cruel times
When a wordless lullaby
Controls me

Hours turn to days
Like gunpowder turns to smoke
Devouring the rays
Like sunflowers til you choke
Cowards used to hide behind the system
Now it’s broke
It’s just another symptom
Of this death we’re dying slow

We’re in over our heads
Deep rain in the gutter
So let’s take our time
Now that the fire’s smothered

It’s strange
How we do it to ourselves
This masochism
Where we sink our kids in prison cells

Maybe we’re lost
Clipped wings of an albatross
Or maybe that’s just the cost

Cruel times
When the glow of city light
Burns slowly

Cruel times
When a wordless lullaby
Controls me
